Most of her experiences have been very positive. “At worst I’ll get a credit that says Julian instead of Jillian. That’s happened fairly regularly,” Edelstein says. “Fan sites are a problem, especially with the photographs I have taken of high-profile actors, such as Helena Bonham Carter. People just download and use them on their sites, which is upsetting.”

Truth and Reconciliation Hearings
In 1996 Edelstein returned to South Africa for a family wedding. While there she watched scenes from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which was set up to help remedy the effects of apartheid and which was covered every Sunday evening on South African television. On her return to London she put together a proposal to Kathy Ryan at the New York Times Magazine, who agreed to send her out there to cover events. On that first trip she was commissioned to photograph Nelson Mandela (who at that time was president). She also took photographs at commission hearings and was assigned another trip from which the New York Times ran a huge spread. From that point on Edelstein was gripped and decided to make further visits to cover more of the hearings. These later trips, which were made between 1997 and 2001, were mostly funded by her. “I was going back and forth about four to five times a year,” says Edelstein, “returning to London to carry out commissioned work.” The hearings took place all over South Africa. She was allowed to set up makeshift studios in rooms next door to where the hearings were being held. Other times she visited people at home, from white suburban areas to the townships.
